Since 1634, the Passion Play has been performed in Oberammergau once every decade. The Play goes back to a vow made by the villagers in 1633 in their desperate effort to free their village from the plague. This tradition of staging the Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ every ten years is a tradition which will continue for the 42nd time in 2020. In the early 17th Century, there were passion plays being staged all over Central Europe. The Oberammergau Play has a virtually unbroken tradition which has survived even times when government and church authorities prohibited the blending of religion and theater as no longer befitting their dogma. Today it is considered one of the most important religious and cultural events in Germany. Nearly 500,000 spectators from all over the world are expected to attend. Rehearsals will start at the end of November 2019. The Play's premiere will be on May 16th, 2020, followed by a total of 103 performances until October 4th, 2020.
